Close Encounter of the Colorado Kind...
Tonight after work, Sarah and I donned our running gear, including headlamps and set off on our run on a nearby trail on which we have been running. About a mile into the run, I spotted something approximately 200 feet ahead of us cross the trail. Immediately, we stopped and assess the situation. I couldn't tell how big the animal was because it was so far away but I shined my light around and caught a pair of eyes running towards us in the canal running about 10 feet away parallel to the trail. Sarah snatched Finch up immediately (he's a jack russell, fierce, yet still a little guy) and I began to scream at the large coyote now sleeking past us. He took off in the opposite direction but his eyes were lit by my headlamp the entire way. Needless to say, we immediately excited the trail and ran in the well light neighborhoods for the rest of our run. I wasn't really scared when it was happening but looking back, things could have gone down much differently. If I had not have seen something pass in front of us on the trail, would the coyote have circled around us and attacked us from behind? Were there others that we didn't see? Koufax isn't exactly a guard dog, he probably would have tried to play with the thing. Ironically, Sarah has been bringing mace on our runs and she was in such a rush tonight that she left it behind. After we talked about what happened, the next run she's going to bring her bear spray which she says is mace on steroids.

the coyote wouldn't have bothered you. it's mountain lions you need to worry about. they attack from behind and most of the time you have no idea they are there. there has never been a recorded attack by a coyote or wolf on a human in the US. Plus, they hunt in packs so you would hear them "talking" to eachother before they would attack you:) BUT, dogs and cats in yards, that's another story.
Yeah, I hear you about the mountain lions. Did you read my post in late July or early August when we were still ignorant to the CO wildlife.
I wasn't concerned about Sarah's or my safety, I was concerned about the pups because one is 15 pounds and the other is a 45 pound walking teddy bear.
Regardless, coming from VA, it is a little unnerving to see a large coyote so close to your house in the city.
