Koufax Sauer-Court

Meet our new family member, Koufax!

Cuddle Monkey!

He likes giving kisses...

The shelter initially said he is a 3-4 month old Australian Shepherd mixed with Pointer then another staff member said that no, he's a Boxer mixed with Pointer. Who knows what his breed is, all I know is he's handsome and adorable! They said he will probably be 50-60 lbs. The vet also said that Wendall was going to be 75 lbs and he is less than 50 so who really knows....

I have wanted a second dog for quite some time. It just hasn't been the best timing until now. Well, it's probably not the MOST ideal timing with Matt being in school and being so busy but it's like having kids; are you ever REALLY ready for a puppy?

I was driving home yesterday and I drove past the Dumb Friends League. I thought, I'll just go and look....yeah right! I found a real cutie, a Catahoula Cur, which is a herding dog. When I sent a photo to Matt he didn't automatically shoot down the idea and we discussed what it would be like to have a puppy and to integrate him into our family. Needless to say, Mr. Wendall is a little (tongue-in-cheek) de-socialized. However, in his defense, he has lived with another dog before and I truly believe it can be done again. Anyway, I digress.

I was really excited/nervous all day today about the herding puppy and when I got to the shelter, I couldn't find him. Someone had adopted him in the 2 hours after I left yesterday. So I looked around and there was this beautiful black and white puppy that really caught my eye. Matt and I visited with him for about an hour and he was so sweet and chill. He was a great cuddler but he wasn't too needy. I talked with several staff members about integrating the 2 dogs and they had many ideas but they all had the same theme: keep them apart and bring them together on neutral territory. Matt and I plan on crate training Koufax and the shelter was nice enough to give us a collapsable crate which saved us probably $70. They also gave a really nice toy and some free Science Diet dog food. They were really helpful and I give them mad props for helping adopt approximately 40 dogs daily.

Koufax will say goodbye to his little guys tomorrow and we will pick him up on Friday.

I am so excited for this challenge. I know it is not going to be easy but I know it will be worth it. Matt and I want Wendall to be better socialized and have a friend to play with. I want to be able to take the 2 of them hiking, although Koufax is too young to walk on the leash as of now.

Stay tuned for a post regarding the homecoming of Koufax and Mr. Wendall's acclimatization.

Hope all is well!
