Our training began last Tuesday 5/6/2008. The first run was an easy 4 miler until I started to feel something weird in my left hip. It started off as more of an annoyance but as the run progressed, it started to become more intense. 3 miles into the run, I told Matt to keep going and I was going to stretch. I stretched and tried to start running again and the pain was WAY worse (7/10) and I couldn't run. I tried one more time but it just wasn't happening. I limped home and limped for the next day. Being a PT, at times I am a hypochondriac and try to self-diagnose. I was freaking out because I thought it may be a trochanteric bursitis which is a tenacious injury to heal. I ended up diagnosing the injury as a left deep gluteal strain. That's right....I injured my butt. I only missed 2 runs (9 miles) but I was a little anxious about getting injured on my first run. I can't help but think, "am I too old for this?" Nah! I am going to be careful to not do too much too quickly and to warm up and stretch properly. Since then I have ran 15 miles without a problem so I am feeling much better about it!
Week One Totals: 120.60 minutes, 14 miles, 1800 kcals, and 1 butt strain.
Current weight: 146lb :(
This next week: 22 miles scheduled 4,6, 4, 4, 4.
Thanks for reading this far!
